Center Joint Unified School District

This year Dudley Elementary will be implementing the Sacramento Countywide Bullying Prevention Project (SC-BPP). The purpose of this program is to establish a school-based bullying prevention program and build an infrastructure that will support expansion of bullying prevention efforts throughout the district. This project will provide strategies that will promote student mental health and provide early interventions for students and families who need them.

There are two prevention programs that will be implemented at both the Dudley and Spinelli school sites: Second Step and Healthy Play.

The Second Step Program (Student Success Through Prevention) will address the following critical skills with one lesson per week in areas such as substance abuse prevention, bullying prevention (including cyber-bullying), violence prevention, empathy and communication, emotions management and coping skills, and problem-solving/decision-making/goal-setting.

Healthy Play is an educational program that promotes empathy and compassion for others through the use of interactive games. There are many different games that allow students to achieve feelings of success and well-being. Students feel empowered through play, thus giving them a sense of how to manage or prevent the intimidating, aggressive, bullying or violent behaviors that they may encounter at school. Through this program, children will be able to learn more effective social and behavioral management skills.

Speaking of Healthy Play, Spinelli reports that the grant from the Early Mental Health Initiative will help with character education, classroom management, and conflict resolution. The program was created for students in grades K -- 6 in order for them to learn socialization skills necessary for successful peer interaction.

Both schools look forward to a great school year as they develop students with healthy minds and bodies and prepare them for successful futures.
