I am venturing out and around the Sacramento area to find some of the “hidden gems” for the golf enthusiast. So far we have been to those well known courses such as Haggin Oaks, Ancil Hoffman, Mather and Cherry Island. This month, I will show you a great course that you might not be aware of. Nestled in the farmlands of South Sacramento and Elk Grove is Wildhawk Golf Club. While being set between farmland and housing developments, Wildhawk likes to be thought of as having a “high desert” look with corresponding foliage and vegetation. They have man made streams and waterfalls running through the acreage and have also created a great drainage system to make the course very playable during the Sacramento rain season. Wildhawk was opened in 1997 and was designed by JMP Design Group. The price for a round of golf at Wildhawk ranges from $14.00- $41.00 not including cart and walking is an option here.
Wildhawk Golf Course, located in South Sacramento, is a course that is setup for all skill levels of golfer. There are four sets of tees that range from 4847 yds to 6718 yds. The course itself is fairly flat and open. While there are trees, there are plenty of escape routes built into the course routing. Part of the course does route through housing development so you do have to watch for houses. This course grew as a result of the housing boom in South Sacramento and Elk Grove, and has become a solid fixture in the Sacramento golf scene. While there I met locals who play at least once a week at Wildhawk and enjoy inviting friends to join them. Wildhawk offers a fun time and the ability to fine tune your game depending on which tees you use and your style of game. The fairways and tee boxes are in great shape. The greens are not playing at super fast speeds but will give you a true roll and opportunities to score well. The rough, while deep, is not overly penalizing and the bunkers play fair in regards to depth and placement on the course.
The staff at Wildhawk is very friendly and accommodating. This starts in the pro shop and follows suit on the course with the marshals and beverage cart attendees. The golfers are also easy going and very welcoming. Take a venture out to the South Sacramento farmlands and fins a hidden gem in Wildhawk Golf Club.
