Remember the “old” Perko’s down on Watt Avenue?
NOT FOUND: perkos2.jpgRemember the 1970’s upholstery? Perko’s of Antelope recently had a makeover and those mint green (or were they salmon colored?) booths are a thing of the past. This place is much more warm, welcoming and the customer service has always been great, even in the “good old days”. However, we really like what the owners have done with the place!
Whether you don’t feel like cooking, or want to dine-in versus “drive through” to get a big burger, Perko’s is a sure bet.
They have the family favorites: chicken fried steak, mac n’ cheese, meatloaf and a host of sandwiches to choose from. If you aren’t the type that likes mega-menus (a la one of my favorites, Cheesecake Factory) - not to worry - this menu is easy to thumb through.
When you’re closer to the Antelope side of town, this is the closest (if not only) restaurant of its kind in the neighborhood. It’s perfect for the no-nonsense, meat-and-potatoes eater or for one who says, “I know what I want“. No frills, no fuss, no muss. (Muss is not on the menu )
Perko’s new country décor, unfinished wood beams and red and white checkered accents make you feel like you’re in one of those very well-kept, out of the way diners with an upgrade. Most people I’ve talked to enjoy the breakfasts which are $5.99 everyday all day, but read the fine print. After 2 p.m weekdays they are $6.99, and there is an added charge on certain items like cottage cheese. But their sausage gravy is commendable as are their options for omelets and ½ waffle along with your choice of meats for a bargain breakfast. You can build your own which is quite nice.
NOT FOUND: perkos1.jpgLonging for lunch? Their sweet potato fries are served hot and crispy - light and are also a bit more than traditional potato fries in terms of cost (read the fine print). Try the Texas Torpedo Wrap, with grilled chicken, barbecue sauce, a little bit of avocado, (you can probably request extra) lettuce, tomato and cheese. They also have tuna melts which I have found aren’t on every menu, and some very hefty portions for big appetites.
Macaroni and cheese is going to be very cheesy, think melted gobs of FOUR kinds of cheese (not cheapened cheese flavored gravy) over hearty penne pasta. Don’t think of the Southern version, it’s more Italian-American without the added seasoning. And it goes well with a salad and their house garlic bread.
For dessert they have the old fashioned ice cream shakes, served with the blender cup which is in and of itself a good reason to go and feel like you’re back at the “parlor”. For those of you waxing nostalgic, there are some pretty good deals for seniors 60 and over. One flap of the menu features dinners for 10 dollars!
Bravo for their extremely fast service, they really do attempt to get your food out to you quickly. Try it out, enjoy the “NEW” Perko’s under new management, and tell them the North Sacramento News sent you!
