A national survey found that in these tough economic times spending money on experiences rather than material possessions results in feeling happier and more fulfilled. Experiences prove to be more satisfying due to the benefits they bring. Experiential purchases contribute to memory making and more successful social relationships. By participating in a new class, joining a sports league, or enjoying a park, relationships and memories are made. As a parent, we want to create these happy memories for our children because just like us, a child is more apt to remember their first swim lesson or summer at camp rather than the new toy they received. Recreation can help in creating these memorable experiences for your children. North Highlands Recreation and Park District is currently offering several summer experiences including sports for the whole family, Summer Swim Lessons and Summer Kids Camp. Safeguard Your Summer, Learn to Swim

As summer approaches and temperatures rise, looking for new and exciting activities for your children is quickly becoming a priority. As you begin to choose these programs, take these statistics into consideration: 1,500 children and teens die annually in the United States from drowning incidents, making it the second leading cause of death for children ages 1-14. Children from non-swimming households are eight times more likely to be at-risk of drowning, while those who participate in swimming programs have a decreased chance of becoming a fatal statistic. One of the best ways to safeguard your child is to equip them with the ability to be safe in water. The North Highlands Recreation and Park District is offering our Learn to Swim Program this summer for all ages, including adults. Each two week session our Red Cross Certified Instructors will teach your children to be safe in any aquatic environment. Registration is in full swing, with sessions beginning June 7th. Additionally, we offer Recreational Swim, Lap Swim, and Water Aerobics to fulfill all of your aquatic needs. For more information, please contact Christie at 332-7440, or drop by the North Highlands Recreation and Park District office located at 6040 Watt Avenue.
