From just about any aspect, being a teen parent is difficult. Many teen parents end up dropping out of school, in part, because they have nobody to cover child care while they are in school. Now there’s help in the North Highlands area - a school and resource center geared specifically for teen parents.

Community Collaborative Charter School (CCCS), a public independent study K-12 charter school based in McClellan Park, has opened a resource center at the Birth and Beyond Center located at 5621 North Watt Avenue. The outreach site, which is open two afternoons per week, is focused on helping teenage parents earn their high school diplomas by offering individualized study plans to complete graduation requirements and pass the California High School Exit Exam, child care, and access to wraparound support services.

Currently, the outreach center is open Monday and Wednesday afternoons, but next year the hours will expand. Says teacher Kim Brenneman, “We’re really excited about expanding our hours for the 2010-2011 school year. This will include more lab hours for extra help.” Birth and Beyond can refer students to a number of wraparound services including home visitations and support groups, and help with housing, employment, nutrition, and domestic violence.

CCCS has several other outreach centers including the WIND center, part of WIND Youth Services, located in Old North Sacramento, and one in the Logan Park housing complex.
