Congressman Dan Lungren announced recently that California’s 3rd Congressional District has ten more reasons to be extremely proud. He will have the great honor of announcing the 2010 appointees to the military service academies in a ceremony May 1 at the Aerospace Museum of California at McClellan Park.

Ten of the field of 16 nominated from the 3rd District he represents have been awarded appointments to military service academies – a high number. Seven of the 10 to receive those appointments are headed to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO - an impressive number.

“That’s exceptional,” said Gary Carpenter, who works in the Admissions Congressional Liaison Office at the Air Force Academy.

Among those headed for Colorado Springs is Shane Welch, Antelope, a senior at Oakmont High School. Some of Shane’s accomplishments were participation in swim team and Recreational summer swim team, Water Polo Olympic Development Junior National Zone Training Team, Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor at Sunrise Parks and Recreation District in 2008 and 2009, and serving as Youth Coach of the American River Water Polo Club since 2008.

Lungren released this statement:
“I am proud to represent a congressional district where young men and women manifest such wonderful leadership attributes,” Lungren said. “It is a tribute to them, their families, their educators and the community at large. It is fantastic that 10 will move on and serve their country in such a way.”
