The GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club is proud of the club women who have gone before us. All of these women are very special in their own way. Julia Ward Howe known for the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” was the founder of the New England Woman’s Club in 1868 along with Caroline M. Severance. Phoebe Apperson Hearst was the elected Treasurer of the GFWC. She was a member of the Century Club of San Francisco serving as the Club’s first President.

Alice Lakey helped write a GFWC resolution that assisted club women in their support of the legislation and enforcement of the first food and drug laws. Eleanor Roosevelt was an active member of the Chautauqua Woman’s Club. Jane Addams founded the Hull House in 1889, which provides domestic violence services and other family services still today. She was a member of the Chicago Woman’s Club. Jane became active in social movements working in male-dominated professions. Jane was the first American woman to receive The Nobel Peace Prize for her work reforming the Illinois’ Juvenile Court Law of 1889. Our club women have been quietly changing the world, one community at a time, for over 140 years. Be a part of something special & join us at our next meeting.

At our February meeting we made our emergency Buddy Bears. We made about 10 bears and have 20 more ready to stuff. We would like to thank the two women in our community who donated fabric. We have enough fabric to make many more bears. We plan to continue to make bears at our April meeting on the 10th. We all enjoyed making the bears so much that no one wanted to go home.

Please join us at our next meeting Saturday, March 13th at Perko’s on Watt Avenue near Elverta Road. The meeting will start at 2 pm. Check us out at www.gfwc.org or on our Facebook page GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club. E-mail us at antelopeGFWC@comcast.net or telephone Dori at 332-7133.
