NOT FOUND: restaurant review.jpgSome of you may remember watching Popeye cartoons as a kid - the sailor who ate spinach to tap into Samson like strength. For every feat that Popeye would heroically endeavor - Bluto was the bad guy, the menace, the meanie. It's been more than 80 years for the cartoon. Now in real life, Bluto has come to Antelope - but this time, he's the hero.

Welcome the advent of Bluto's Sports Grill. It has been a long time - if ever - that the North area has had a "hang out" spot, some place where 'everybody knows your name'. A place where the food actually surpasses expectation. Locally grown produce, organic free range meats from Napa, and a twist of flavor a la the restaurants usually found in Roseville and Downtown Sacramento are bringing a bit of a taste explosion to Walerga Road.

Owner, Jeff Andahl boasts an impressive resume, to include working with the likes of famed restaurateur and TV host Guy Fieri. He took a break from the food industry to work at the Sacramento Zoo. Thankfully his newest venture doesn't feel like a circus act.

Jeff is the real deal -- having brought in bakers and chefs from more name brand locations, Blutos boasts barbecue chicken pizza topped with arugula and deep fried cheesecake. "Grown up" Macaroni and cheese is a complete meal featuring a creamy cheddary sauce and topped with smoky bacon.

Don't be put off by the simple, paper menu. The food still goes down the same. Tasty. Pretty soon the "sports grill" is expected to have a full, more permanent menu.

Those who have already frequented the joint since its opening hope Bluto's is a more permanent fixture of the community. The grill boasts a community room that can be used by anyone in the community as a meeting place, decorated with jerseys and photos from Antelope and Center High Schools. Beyond the bar, there are some high back, more private booths fit for dining and quiet conversation that could be considered almost relaxing against the din of game watchers.

"I didn't want it be a 'bar'..hence the term 'sports grill'. I want this to be a hang out, but I want it be family friendly, a place the community can enjoy, " says Andahl.

Enjoyable yes - is the great food at a great price. If you remember "Wimpy" from the Popeye cartoon? The cast of characters doesn't show up around the restaurant - but on your plate. You'll even feel like the man, when you order one..then two ...then a few "wimpy burgers". The sliders feature fresh ground meat and a juicy pickle, replete with special sauce and grilled onion. Not only are they delicious -- they are only 99 cents.

Move over Wimpy -- Bluto's burgers can't be beat!
