NOT FOUND: womens club.jpgThe GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club is celebrating Flag Day on June 14th. Did you know the Star-Spangled Banner is an actual flag? The poem written by Francis Scott Key is about one particular flag flying during the battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. Key watched the bombardment of the Fort by the British Royal Navy ships. The Star Spangled Banner is on display at the Smithsonian Institution. It is huge! It is 30 feet by 42 feet which means it covers 1,260 square feet.

The Star Spangled Banner has 15 stars and 15 stripes. There was a short period of time that we added a star and a stripe to the flag for each new state. This flag was authorized in 1794 by Congress, and was made in 1813. It has been conserved and is now visible to all who enter the National Museum of American History just inside the museum's Mall Entrance.

All American flags represent a living country and are considered living things. When an American flag is in poor condition or any condition that is no longer fit to fly, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner. The first choice is burning. There is a United States Flag Code which tells us how to treat the flag, when to fly the flag and when not to fly the flag.
