How can you keep your lawn looking good and be water efficient at the same time? Be “smart” about how you apply water.

Know your soil. If the soil beneath the turf is clay or hardpan, turf should be watered for very short durations in multiple intervals. Applying water for ten minutes at a time may be too long, as water cannot penetrate the hard surface. In fact, most of the water will result in runoff. Try applying water in five minute intervals, three times, on the day you water.

Frequency. When watering, give lawns a good soak – even if it takes several intervals to accomplish. Deep root watering is what lawns really need. When accomplished, you can go three to four days between watering.

Time of day. Water in the early morning or late evening – never during the heat of the day or when it is windy.
