The GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club along with all the General Federation of Women’s Clubs across the nation have adopted a new women’s club slogan “Hats, Gloves & Bags are still part of our tradition”. This is a play on the old fashioned notion that women in the clubs wear fancy hats, white gloves and carry handbags.  We do still wear hats when necessary, like hard hats: we now wear work gloves and the bags we carry have a function, like a trash bag used on a “clean your public street” project. Our women are working hard every day to make our communities better places to live.

Last month we gift wrapped Christmas gifts for anyone who came into the Umpqua Bank in Antelope.  We wish to thank everyone involved, including the five people from Kohl’s who volunteered their time to help us gift wrap. The money we made from donations will help us pay the shipping for our “Baby Showers through the Mail” project.  The Antelope Quilters Guild makes wonderful baby quilts for us to send to the military families having a baby each month. We add some clothes or other small items.  The shipping is costly, but it’s such a wonderful project. The money will also go to help our domestic violence shelter with our socks project.  We place a pair of socks in a plastic bag with encouraging words on it for the women, men and children at our local shelters.

We have a seminar each October which focuses on a women’s or children’s issue. The 2011 seminars were on domestic violence, women’s heart health, teen dating violence and last October we focused on foster kids & the Guardian Scholar program for former foster kids that are students at Sac State.  Our next idea is a Bicycle Rodeo to help teach kids and teens bicycle safety. This project is in its infant stage and we could use your help, if any of these projects interest you.

Our next meeting will be Jan 14th at the Super 8 Motel behind Brookfield’s restaurant off Hwy 80 and Madison Ave. The meeting is in the breakfast room and will start at 11:30 am. Be sure and check us out at www.gfwc.org or www.cfwc.org, on face book at GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club or e-mail us at antelopeCFWC.org.   You can also call us at 916-332-7133 and ask for Dori. We would love to see you at our meeting.
