In the first of a monthly series of speakers, Col. C.E. “Bud” Anderson spoke with the students of the California Aerospace Academy on Tuesday, January 19. The Academy, one of north Sacramento’s best kept secrets, is a public charter school located on the former McClellan Air Force Base. Students in grades 7-12 welcomed Col. Anderson as he talked about his life as a World War II Triple Ace. Col. Anderson made his presentation at the Aerospace Museum of California, a partner of CAA, and spoke of how he had always wanted to fly and through drive and determination realized his dream. Some 140+ students listened to him relate his experiences as a fighter pilot and watched a video showing how he destroyed an enemy aircraft during the war.

The California Aerospace Academy is open to any student in middle or high school with a desire to pursue a career in aviation or engineering. Class sizes are small allowing for a unique teacher/student experience. While students receive the California state curriculum, classes are presented with a slant toward aerospace. A unique Project Lead the Way program allows students to explore hands-on projects related toward engineering and aviation. Each month a different speaker will talk with the students about some career related to aerospace. Future presentations include the Tuskegee Airmen, Sacramento County Airport, California National Guard and others.
