David DeArcos, the principal of Antelope View Charter School, says that
sometimes it seems like his school is a well-kept secret. "We're tucked
in behind Center High School, just off Watt Avenue. You can drive right
by on Watt and never even see our campus," says Mr. DeArcos. "So a lot
of people are surprised when they find out they've a got a fully
accredited charter school right in their own backyard."

There's another interesting issue Mr. DeArcos frequently deals with.
"You'd be amazed at how many people think we charge tuition. It's a
real common misconception. But California law requires charter schools
to be free - we couldn't charge a dime even if we wanted to. We do
think our quality is just as good as schools that charge tuition,
though. We like to say we offer a private school education at a public
school price!"

Antelope View is an Independent Study school that works on a hybrid
model. Students are required to attend classes for several hours
Tuesday through Friday, but complete much of their work at home. "It's
the best of both worlds, really," says Mr. DeArcos. "Students are able
to work independently most of the time, which gives them a lot of
freedom for things like jobs, college, or family obligations. But they
also get valuable classroom time, where teachers can answer questions
and lend assistance."

Grades 6 through 12 are served at Antelope View, which is currently
registering students for the spring semester. The school offers weekly
orientations for families who are interested in attending. Call
