Incoming and Euthanasia Rates Down From 2008 levels
When the new Animal Care Facility opened its doors in late 2009, expectations were high that adoptions, volunteerism and visitors would increase, and that’s exactly what happened. Adoption rates are up, and euthanasia rates are down from the same period last year. In fact, cat adoptions are up over eight percent from last year and dog euthanasia rates have dropped a whopping 10 percent.
“These numbers are extremely encouraging for the staff and volunteers,” said Pat Claerbout, Animal Care Facility Director. “The new building, increased public awareness and volunteerism are all working together to increase adoptions and reduce euthanasia rates, and we are starting to see the results of all our hard work.”
Other measures of success include:
· 2 percent drop in cat euthanasia rates
· 2 percent increase in dog adoptions
· Nearly 10 percent drop in incoming dogs
· 2 percent drop in incoming cats.
The old shelter, originally built in the 1960’s, was not equipped to handle the influx of animals that came in daily. Adopters and volunteers were put off by the old concrete and wire fencing, cramped working conditions and the “pound” atmosphere. Conversely, the beautiful new shelter is welcoming to adopters and volunteers and will help more abandoned animals find new forever homes and reduce the numbers being euthanized.
“While these numbers are a good start, we know that there is more we have to do. Even though we experienced a 35 percent reduction in staff from last year, we will keep moving in the right direction,” Claerbout said. “This is exactly what we were aiming for.”
