While math and science continue to be an important area of studies for today’s and tomorrow’ careers, there is a disturbing trend that has been identified in middle school aged girls. In the early grades, young girls are much more likely to do well in these subjects and list them as areas of interest. In later years, they report being less interested in math science and are not performing as well in those subjects.

The past three years, girls in the Twin Rivers USD have been invited to an event that is designed to re-ignite their passion in math and science.

Project DREAM, Twin Rivers Education Foundation, sponsored 100 sixth through eighth grade girls to attend the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference in October. The one-day CSUS science camp is designed to encourage and empower young women to pursue education and careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and included interactive workshops, exhibits, and lively discussions.

Thanks to Project DREAM, Twin Rivers once again had the largest delegation of are students attending the Fifth Annual EYH conference. About half of the 200 conference attendees were from Twin Rivers, including students in after-school programs, where STEM is a focus this year.
