Q. What is water pressure?
A. Water pressure is created by the weight and elevation of water and/or generated by pumps that deliver water to your tap.  Gravity flow is the most cost efficient and dependable way to deliver water to your home.
Q. How can mineral deposits affect my water pressure?
A. Mineral deposits from hard water can clog filters carrying water to your washer, shower heads, faucet aerators and landscape irrigation parts.  The deposits are not harmful and can be easily removed by soaking the filter or part(s) in vinegar periodically.
Q. What amount of pressure is considered normal?
A. Sacramento Suburban Water District (SSWD) strives to supply water pressure at 40 - 60 pounds per square inch (psi) to all customers, however the District’s minimum pressure is 35 psi.  Pressure varies by the elevation of your property and facilities that serve water in your area.
Q. How can I check my water pressure?
A. Ways to check your water pressure include:
1. Have a plumber check it.
2. Buy a water pressure gauge that adapts to your hose-bib at a hardware store.
3. If you are a SSWD customer, call 972.7171 for a Water-Wise House Call appointment.  A District representative will come to your house and not only check your water pressure, but also provide you with a personalized evaluation of your water system to potentially save you money and water.
Q. Why is water pressure sometimes higher in early morning and lower during the remainder of the day?
A. Neighborhood water use is less in the early morning hours, before families are awake using their washers, dishwashers, showering and watering their lawns.  If you are experiencing difficulties with the effectiveness of your system, try changing the schedule.
Q. Who can I contact if I have further questions on water pressure?
A. Call SSWD during business hours at 972.7171.
