Linens, alarm clock, cleaning and office supplies—a few of the items on the recommended shopping list at Project Dream’s Second Annual College Bound Shopping Spree.
26 recent Twin Rivers graduates were invited to shop for $300 in dorm supplies with a favorite teacher, coach, counselor or staff member. All of these students participated in the College Bound 101 class this past spring to understand the basics of college housing, securing financial aid and making the emotional transition to college.
“To many people, $300 isn't much, but to me it was a huge help. Mrs. Reed was a wonderful help and I am really grateful for her advice. I know with the things that I was able to buy, the transition will be somewhat easier,” said Highlands High School graduate and College Bound participant Brenda Perez Rangel. “I will never forget the support I received, because to me it is not only money but a push for me to keep following the path I have chosen.”
Perez Rangel will be attending University of California at Davis (UC Davis) in the fall.
“I’m really excited to be able to get all of these things for my college dorm,” said Lee Lo, a Grant High School graduate. “Although I work, I was unsure of how I was going to be able to purchase the things that I need to start a whole new life on my own.” Lo will also be attending UC Davis this fall.
Over half of these fortunate students were also awarded a Toshiba laptop, anti-virus software and Microsoft Office software. All College Bound scholarship recipients are eligible to receive an additional $100 gift card if they send in their first semester grades to confirm that they have made the transition to college and are making progress towards their academic goals.
