Conference will address key issues about feral and other free-roaming cats
On Sunday, July 31, community cat advocates from the Sacramento region will gather for a day-long Compassion for Community Cats Conference featuring presentations on key topics affecting feral and other free roaming cats in the area. The event begins at 8 a.m. at the California Auto Museum at 2200 Front Street and will feature Bryan Kortis of PetSmart Charities as a keynote speaker with a special presentation from Dr. Cristie Kamiya of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program and Staycee Dains of the City of San Jose Animal Care and Services.
The over-arching theme of the conference is the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) method of controlling feral and semi-feral cat population and issues related to this effort. Mr. Kortis has extensive experience in management of TNR programs and in the presentation of educational workshops. Another feature of the conference will be panel discussions covering mass trapping projects, details on post-Trap-Neuter-Return programs, issues related to the relocation of feral cats, and a discussion of veterinary resources for feral cats.
The afternoon session will provide the opportunity for breakout sessions where attendees will brainstorm on community collaboration ideas. Throughout the day a sharing corral will be in place where groups can distribute information and share resources.
Colony caregivers, animal rescues, shelter staff and anyone interested in the humane treatment of “community cats” are welcome to attend this conference. Registration is required. The conference is limited to the first 100 attendees. The registration fee is $30 and includes continental breakfast, lunch and conference materials. More information and a registration form are available online at http://www.sacanimal.org/.
