The Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a local, independent non-profit organization that was established in 1894. It is dedicated to ensuring the humane treatment of all animals in the Sacramento area. The Sacramento SPCA seeks to promote respect for all life by breaking the cycle of abuse, neglect and pet overpopulation in our communities.

An awesome program and service that the Sacramento SPCA offers is Spay & Neuter Clinics. Why would you spay or neuter your pet, you may ask. Simple, there are just too many pets and not enough homes. Spay/Neuter is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus of a female to prevent pregnancy or the removal of the testicles of males to prevent them from impregnating females. Spaying/neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives by eliminating or reducing the incidence of a number of health problems that can be very difficult and/or expensive to treat. Spayed/neutered pets are typically better behaved and more calm and affectionate than those that are not. Also communities spend millions of dollars to control unwanted animals. This will decrease the homeless animal population. It will decrease the number of strays, which are often involved in dog bites and attacks, automobile accidents, defication on and damage to private property, and more. Pets do not have any concept of sexual identity or ego. Neutering will not change a pet’s basic personality. Pets will not suffer any kind of emotional reaction or identity crisis when neutered.

The program “We Pay to Spay” offers free spay/neuter surgeries for pit bulls and pit bull mixes by appointment only. The surgery is done at the Sacramento SPCA and only available to Sacramento County residents and West Sacramento residents. You must show proof of residency at the time of your appointment. Schedule an appointment today by calling 916-504-2817 or email WPTS@sspca.org for appointment information. All other breed dogs and cat spay and neuter appointments are not free. Feral cat spay/neuter clinics can be reached at 916-504-2818 for appointment information. For additional information visit www.sspca.org and start helping your pet and your community today!
