NOT FOUND: federation day.jpgThe GFWC Antelope –North County Women’s Club is celebrating Federation Day on April 24, 2011. Federation Day is a day set aside to celebrate the founding of the General Federation of Women’s Club which was founded in Seneca Falls, New York in 1890. In 1901the 56th Congress of the United States chartered the GFWC and designated that the GFWC headquarters be located in Washington D.C. The California connection is a grand lady named Phoebe Apperson Hearst. She was the first Treasurer for the GFWC (1890-1892) and the first Club President of the Century Club of San Francisco which was one of the first clubs to join the General Federation of Women’s Club in 1890. Phoebe Hearst was the Mother of William Randolph Hearst, the famous publisher and wife of George Hearst, who became a U.S Senator. Phoebe only had one child. She was a major benefactor of the University of California, Berkeley serving as the first woman on the Board of Regents from 1897 until she passed away in 1919. She not only helped start the GFWC but also helped to start the Golden Gate Kindergarten Association and the National Congress of Mothers which evolved into the National Parent –Teachers Association. She served on the board of Mount Vernon from 1889 to 1918 helping to electrify and furnish the first President‘s home. She was a very special Californian lady.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs has always helped women with their education. Today many of our California Clubs and our California Districts still give away thousands of dollars to deserving women to help them further their educations. The GFWC California Federation of Women’s Clubs gives scholarships to musicians and artist to help them complete their education. www.cfwc.org.
