The GFWC Antelope-North county Women’s Club & the GFWC, General Federation of Women’s Clubs are helping out in Haiti and all over the world through a program called the Plan USA. What is Plan USA? It is a program with a long term commitment to help children and their families achieve their full potential. The program started out in 1937 with a commitment to provide food, accommodations and education to children in war-torn Spain at the height of the Spanish Civil War. This program has not really changed that much since 1937; the big change has been in the scope of the program. Today, Plan USA is in 48 developing countries and is one of the largest development organizations.

The foundation of the program is to have people sponsor a child. Right now there are one million sponsors from 17 donor countries helping over one million children along with their families and communities. Plan USA does not provide direct assistance, instead the plan helps communities develop and grow with an idea of self support. The idea is that communities will develop the structures and skills they need to provide a safe and healthy environment in which children can realize their full potential.
