Flying high on a breezy evening, our flag that had previous flown at our nation’s capitol on July 1, 2008, graced our presence on Sept. 8, at 7:15 pm when Antelope High School was officially declared open. There was a sense of Titan pride when hundreds of students, parents, faculty and community leaders gathered on the campus of the new school to hear members of the school board give thanks for a dream come true. The flag that flew at the White House and at the opening ceremony will be on display in the Antelope High School office.
After 19 years of planning and passing bond measures, the hard work of many came to fruition and a new high school was birthed. It was important for the Antelope community to design a facility that would last up to 200 years. This took almost 100 million dollars and more than four dozen architects at Williams plus Paddon to accomplish. “We want this school to stand strong and stand the test of time for many students in Antelope,” said Principal Becker during his opening speech.
Following the opening ceremony, Back to School Night began. Parents could view the classrooms where chalkboards have been replaced with Smartboards, computers are at most work stations, the chemistry lab looks like it could do some serious damage and high tech equipment is all around you. The media department was especially impressive. They are fully equipped to film their own TV show, complete with a green screen. Their first-ever broadcast journalism news show is expected to air in the near future. Mr. LaBlanc, the media teacher, will be taking students to New York and Arizona this school year to view different journalism/video conferences. He hopes that the show will be a national award winning program.
Another beginning for the Antelope Titans was their first home football game on Sept. 11, vs. the Whitney Wildcats. Reporting that the Titans won their first game would be exciting but unfortunately the opposite is true. However, nobody could be more proud that player #2, Dominic Liddel, when he ran 72 yards for their first ever Titan touchdown. Along with the ups, there were also the downs. One member left the game in an ambulance with a broken arm, ending his season. However, the coaches were proud of their team and glad to get game number one under their belt. When asked what the highlight of the evening was, Matt Ray, the J.V. coach, replied, “Seeing the kids and the community. We have a long way to go and things to work on, but we moved the ball and did many positive things.”
With so much more to look forward to, this new high school promises to be on the cutting edge with the student’s careers in mind. There is no lack of activities, clubs, sports and teams for the ninth and tenth graders to get involved in. Everywhere you look you see the red and silver Titans logo proudly displayed. This school of the future has finally opened its doors to bring education to a whole new level and produce well rounded students, ready to conquer the world.
