Have you ever seen piles of junk, old sofas, broken appliances or other types of rubbish dumped along the side of the road in your neighborhood?
"Illegal dumping contributes to blight, drives down property values, encourages additional illegal dumping, is harmful to the environment and costs tax payers thousands of dollars to remove the junk and rubbish,” said Carl Simpson, chief of Sacramento County Code Enforcement. “Illegal dumping generally occurs in remote areas, in low income neighborhoods and is often a crime of opportunity. We take a zero tolerance policy towards illegal dumpers in Sacramento County and those who are caught may face citation and arrest."
If you report illegal dumping you may be eligible for a $250 reward. Call 875-5656 (TDD: 875-7105) or 888-358-8499, or report online at www.countyinfo.saccounty.net. Gather as much information as possible about the incident, including the physical description of the dumper, the vehicle involved and the time, date and location of the incident.
Looking to get rid of your junk and rubbish? There are three disposal options available:
• Make an Appointment – The Department of Waste Management & Recycling provides its customers with a once-a-year pick up of bulky waste by appointment. Call 875-5555 to schedule a pick up.
• Do It Yourself – There are several licensed facilities where you can dispose of junk and rubbish for as little as $20 a load. To find out more about these facilities, visit www.sacgreenteam.com/facilities/default.htm
• Hire a Licensed Hauler – If illegally dumped trash is traced back to you, you could be held liable even if you didn’t do the dumping. Hiring a licensed rubbish hauler protects you and the environment. Contact the County’s Business License Unit at 874-6644 to verify a hauler's license, or visitwww.illegaldumping.saccounty.net/
