NOT FOUND: northwatt1.jpgThis fall has been an exciting one for North Highlands and McClellan both of which are seeing obvious signs of progress. But will there really be a Sonic Burger in North Highlands? And when is that new Ross store opening up? Here are some of the highlights:

NORTH HIGHLANDS TOWN CENTER

Millions of dollars is being invested into getting Freedom Park Drive “shovel-ready” including the construction of new infrastructure and Sacramento County’s first "green street” , though this would not be the first attempt in the county. The City of Sacramento was attempting this on the block where the historic Globe Mills building was renovated… the clock is ticking!

Led by Supervisor Roger Dickinson, a tour of community leaders, developers, contractors and business people began a dialogue as to how much potential Watt Avenue and Freedom Park Drive have and how early preparation will save cash. They are betting on being able to pounce on an economic upswing.

“We want to showcase current opportunities as well as lay the foundation for future projects when the economy improves,” said Supervisor Dickinson.

This is all part of “The Corridor Plan” created with the help of community residents and businesses with the goal of developing North Watt Avenue and the surrounding neighborhood over the next 20 years. It means more homes, better transportation, new construction and improved public spaces like parks as well as the revitalization of existing, vacant or underutilized properties.

WE GOT IT AT ROSS

Have you noticed that the construction is here! Next door to the beauty supply, dry cleaners and Rite Aid it looks like Ross is really on it’s way! The national chain will move in to the former Albertson’s location after the unprecedented success of the dd’s Discounts chain nearest to Watt Avenue and Elkhorn Blvd. (the North Highlands store has the highest sales of all 70 dd’s in the nation according to Sacramento Business Journal) We still haven’t been able to get a call back as to when the doors
will open but we will try again.

NOT FOUND: northwatt2.jpgThe BIG news for foodie fans is that they may be opening up a Sonic Burger at the Elkhorn and Watt shopping center too. We’ll keep our ear to the pavement…meanwhile the Big Lots at Walerga and Elkhorn is also slated to move and draw some shoppers from the dd’s and Ross crowd.

MCCLELLAN PARK

McClellan celebrated its 70th anniversary this year! They are redeveloping the Park’s Peacekeeper Way entrance with a brand new look, signage and landscape. But that’s not all:

Green means jobs: San Francisco based Zeta Communities will open a 91,000-square-foot factory at Mc-Clellan Park, with plans to hire 200 workers over the next couple of years.

The modular green homebuilder will construct “net-zero-energy homes” — which means they produce as much energy as they use. www.zetacommunities.com.

Roseville based Solar Power; Inc (SPI) recently signed a contract to open up shop on McClellan at 3140 Peacekeeper Way. SPI manufactures and markets solar panels and runs a solar-power retail store.

The company plans to install one of its “solar canopy” systems which not only provide covered parking for visitor’s cars but will generate energy for the sites to save on cost. (Check them out on the website here: www. solarpowerinc.net)
