Ever want to help a neighbor anonymously? There is a simple way to reach out and come to the aid of someone going through a tight moment, financially, and it’s as easy as paying your next energy bill. The next time you’re calling SMUD for information on your bill, ask them about the Sacramento Helps program. It allows homeowners or renters to contribute funds to someone with a hardship by adding a set amount to your monthly bill.
The most basic part of the program assists those who can’t afford their SMUD bill and are in danger of having services turned off. SMUD partners up with various organizations and non-profits to support low income families, senior citizens, formerly homeless or domestic abuse victims, but the reach goes beyond keeping the lights on. The company also sends donations to benefit food banks, the Salvation Army, Travelers Aid, and the Folsom Cordova Community Partnership for those who are in need.
It’s a tax deductible donation and donors can choose the agency they prefer to contribute to. The only prerequisite is that in order to give, you must have an active account with no history of having your power turned for at least 12 months.
“It’s been real popular,” says one SMUD customer service agent we talked to, pointing to the ease of giving through a scheduled bill payment by check or online.
Contributions can be as little as a dollar a month – the average donation is up to ten dollars though many give more. Customers who need the help can receive credits up to 200 dollars per year per household. 100 percent of the pooled dollars goes to those in need.
Since 2004, when the program started, one million dollars has been raised to fund these charities. This year, over 10,000 customers will donate $30,000 plus dollars a month to help friends and neighbors on their street, in their community and within their county.
