In 1989 Harnek Athwal moved to Sacramento from San Jose in search of a business opportunity for his family. He decided to purchase a pizza establishment that had originally opened in 1984. He and his wife, Pallo, put in many long hours in the beginning to grow the pizza parlor into a thriving, stable business. Success was a must as he had two small children at the time, his son Harpreet and his daughter Jaspreet. Now grown, Harpreet manages the location in Antelope that the Athwal’s started in 2006 and Jaspreet works at both locations. Harnek and Pallo mostly run the North Highlands location.
Economic times are affecting many businesses right now. The Athwal family has seen some ups and downs but overall the business is “stable and hasn’t been that bad”. They are extremely grateful for their regular customers who make up about 80% of their business. They are also very active in the community. They participate in fundraisers that give back 25% of the sales to little league teams, other sports teams, schools, charities and donate pizza to the VFW Hall in North Highlands. They sponsor sports teams in North Highlands, Rio Linda and Antelope.
Mountain Mikes stands out in the community for a multitude of reasons. It is a family owned establishment, giving it a family atmosphere and making it a great place to bring the children. There are games for the kids to play as well as two big-screen TV’s for the “bigger kids”. They air all the sports events that you could possibly watch and Monday Night Football is always a big hit. You can host birthday parties, sports team award ceremonies, meetings, etc. or just spend a night out with your family and friends. Mountain Mikes offers their Lunch Special that includes pizza and a 21 item salad bar from 11:00am-2:00pm, Monday-Friday; Wednesday Night Specials from 5:00-8:00pm; and Daily Specials that vary day to day.
Family is a major component for the Athwals. You can see it in their business and their personal lives as well. Harnek is not sure what the future holds for them in the business world but he is open to expanding his ownership in a couple of years. For now, he and his family are happy and content with what they have and where they are in life.
