Educational Agriculture Event Takes Place May 9, 2009
A celebration of everything agriculture takes place on Saturday, May 9 at Fairytale Town's Farms, Friends and Fairytales event!
"This event is a fun way for children to learn how important agriculture is to our every day lives," says program manager Sharlene Lal. "It's one thing to hear about how ice cream or butter is made, or how wool is spun into yarn. It's another thing to see it happen in front of your very eyes!"
Children can see Mary's cheviot sheep being sheared at 11AM, then visit our wool spinners, Julie & Steve Johnson, throughout the day to see how they spin the wool into yarn. Next they can learn how to make their very own ice cream, and then make a mini green house to take home.
Families can also visit with a variety of people and organizations who bring agricultural products to market. Guests can learn about produce grown in California from Taylor's Market, and even buy some fresh food to take home. Soil Born Farms will be on hand with information about farming, and will be selling California plants to raise funds for their nonprofit farm. Guests can sample the wares from Pedrozo Dairy and buy a block of their delicious cheese to take home. They can even see a working bee hive and the Queen Bee herself at the Sacramento Beekeepers Association table, where folks can also purchase honey.
The Sacramento County Fair will show off an alternate use for beans by running a beanbag toss, and will give away radish seeds as prizes. The Heidrick Ag History Center will bring out a real tractor to display, and the Country Centre 4-H Club and Heifer International will entertain the young ones with hands-on agriculture activities.
While you wander the grounds learning all about agriculture, you can listen to live bluegrass music provided by the Loose Acoustic Trio on the MG Stage, and some of the Barnyard Buddies who live at Fairytale Town.
