The North Highlands Recreation and Park District is pleased, and very excited, to announce the redevelopment of Freedom Park. This park is located on Freedom Park Drive, adjacent to the Aerospace Museum. It will be the only large, community park in North Highlands. It was given to the Park District through a public benefit conveyance when McClellan Air Force Base closed. The site is approximately 19 acres, and includes 4 lighted ball fields.
The renovation plans include parking, landscaping, trees, playground equipment, basketball court, picnic tables, barbeques, picnic shelters, and an open area for sports. The large Adventure Space Rocket playground will be appropriate for children ages 5 to 12 years. The smaller tot playground will be appropriate for children ages 2 to 5 years. It will be available for picnics, class or family reunions, informal get-togethers, special events, or just enjoying an outing with your family.
The construction is scheduled to begin in May and be completed by October. A ground breaking ceremony is being planned for May. The public will be invited and encouraged to attend. It has taken several years to secure the funding for this project, which will come from a variety of sources including state bond funding, Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Grant, Sacramento County Grant, and District monies.
The theme of Freedom Park will be in keeping with the Aviation Museum, and with the military history of McClellan Air Force Base. The former base played an important role in the development of North Highlands. Many retired military continue to live here as well as retired civilian employees. The Park District's intent is to honor the history of the base, the military and civilians who worked there.
It is the hope of the Board of Directors and staff of the Park District that the residents we serve will find it as exciting as we do, and that it will become a place of community pride.
