NOT FOUND: second-mile.jpgIt’s not unusual to see 30, 40, even 50 people inside the North Highlands Post Office on any given day. What was a little unusual this particular morning was to see 50 people outside the post office on a Saturday morning at 6:30. There were folks from age seven to over 60, working together to help the community residents and the government by cleaning the grounds of our post office.
“My favorite part of this is seeing the job done,” remarked James Buckingham of North Highlands. James and his family work together on a landscape crew for William’s Yard Care. Jeff Scott of Jeff Scott’s Landscape was working by 6:00 am, setting up the tools and getting his mower ready to tackle the job. These companies donated their time and equipment to spruce up the neighborhood.
Under the guidance of Pastor Bill Krause of Family Community Church, this was the start of “Second Mile Saturdays”, a new outreach program with the goal of going the second mile to help residents and businesses tackle a job that they may not have the time for, or the funds for.
The format of the program is to have kids and parents volunteer together to give to others through service. The parents can give their children hands-on training and spend quality family time together, teaching them strong core values.
The crew worked from 6:30-8:00am and the grounds glistened. “Many hands make a light load” is one of Pastor Krause’s favorite mottos and it proved itself true, once again.

Creating opportunities for neighbors to work together towards the goal of making our neighborhoods more beautiful
and strengthening our core values through giving of our time, talent and a little sweat. “It was an extremely rewarding
experience, and I am looking forward to the next one.”
