What is one to do when out of a job, in need of cash fast and open to a non-traditional way to get cash? There is always a chance a world renowned university could be searching for the next human guinea pig.
Okay so it's not quite that dramatic, but you would be a research participant, help provide better nutritional data to the USDA and benefit students who are making the grade as UC Davis researchers. And you certainly can't beat getting paid to do what so many Americans do anyway: consume large amounts of sugar. Yes that is right, UC Davis is currently looking to pay 1000 dollars for someone to consume 3 beverages of sugary goodness all in the name of science. For the next 5 years the school is trying to determine the affects of sugar on a healthy metabolism. No joke. They need volunteers. And considering the recession, the money is a good hook.
There are some catches to being eligible for the project like a mandatory stay at a VA hospital for a few days of the study. You're disqualified if you're a smoker, diabetic or on depression medication. But for someone newly jobless or in need of some extra cash in less than 30 days, it could be a help. Recent studies also include one for the effects on women with irregular periods, another study on obesity in men and women, and yet a different research project that is all about strawberries.

So just how often do these studies take place? Research projects vary, and they usually post these online and in the school publications. But remember, don't take it personally if they don't select you. A human guinea pig is a highly competitive position!
