The GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club would like everyone to know about the Friends of the Library project called “Books for Babies”. This project is a national literacy program that helps parents begin reading to their newborns. Parents are given a “Books for Babies” kit which includes a board book for baby valued at $4.99, baby’s first library card, and a bunch of brochures with reading tips and early literacy information from nationally recognized educational organizations. This project has the parents using the library and teaching their children to use the library. Reading to babies helps to develop language skills and starts them on the road to reading and learning. This kit is also available in Spanish.
Studies show that early literacy positively impacts children’s success in school. Reading out loud to babies stimulates their vision and hearing; teaching babies interactive skills and attention to processes in a pleasant and fun way with their parents acting as the guide. The kits are from FOLUSA, Friends of the Library USA. Check them out at www.FOLUSA.com. Another group helping with children’s reading is the Children’s Book Council. This is a trade organization dedicated to children’s literacy and the use and enjoyment of books. Check them out at www.CBCBooks.org .
