Welcome to the inaugural edition of Golf Sacramento! We will have many exciting things coming for the readers of the North Sac News. One of our first "extras" we are bringing to you is our monthly golf course highlight section. This will be an introduction to courses you may, or may not, know are in the area, ones you haven’t played before or played in a while or simply courses you have always wondered what they were like to play. Please note, we are not here to critique or criticize any course. We are not architects, designers or even professional golfers. We are everyday people who like to play golf. We will be visiting some of the local courses and some of the hidden treasures of the valley to bring you some insight into all the courses the Central Valley has to offer.

Our first course is the Teal Bend Golf Club. Located off the Garden Highway, easily accessible from I-5, Highway 99 and Elverta Rd, Teal Bend is a great spot for golf. You’ll find this course to be challenging for beginners and low handicappers with four different tee boxes and total yardage that ranges from 5,077 to 7,061 yards. There is risk and reward on most holes and you are going to use most of the clubs in your bag.

The surroundings are beautiful. This can be a great thing when you’re not playing too well (as I wasn’t on this occasion) and a wonderful thing when you want to see all the scenery you forgot was available in Sacramento. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. They are quick with a smile and even some friendly advice like, “Lay up on 17." Make sure you say hello to the guys in the pro shop. They take good care of getting you out on time and in an easy and orderly fashion.

Here are some things noted about Teal Bend by our group: "This is a beautiful course. It is extremely difficult to get a good score when looking at the beautiful surroundings. Ya just gotta play it to see for yourself. You will not regret it. This is one of my favorite courses in the Sacramento area. The fairways are pretty forgiving. The course itself is a good test, depending on the tees from which you play. The greens are firm and true. There are plenty of practice facilities. The staff is friendly and helpful. A great place to hold a tournament.”

Teal Bend is an enjoyable place to get a round of golf by yourself. It’s very easy to play at your pace or with some buddies. You will enjoy the surroundings and the golf. And, no matter how you play, you will definitely come away relaxed.
