NOT FOUND: 09_07 July NSN_Page_06_Image_0002.jpgI recently made a trip with a dear friend of mine and her four children to the Yolo Fruit Stand off of I-80 and East Chiles Rd. What an adventure! The kids had never been to a fruit stand and neither had mom so it was fun to see them pick out fruit and taste it right out of the basket. I must say, if you take your kids there, make sure they stay in the cart. We didn’t make it out without a few items crashing to the floor. Our apologies fruit stand folks. Kids will be kids, especially those under the age of six.

The price for cherries that day was nearly half off any I’ve seen at a grocery store at $1.49/lb and strawberries were a steal at $6.99/flat. And whoever thought to see sweet potatoes for $0.69/lb? While their gourmet offerings were a bit pricier, they were as diverse as any boutique grocer in the neighborhood. They had saffron ice cream, Gunther’s fruit freezes and jams imported from Europe. There’s nothing like the feeling of sampling local produce, saving money and showing the kids another side of the produce world. Make it into an educational outing and then get together and make one big fruit salad.

Here are the local farmer’s market locations, not to mention our very own in North Highlands from 10:00am - 2:00pm. It was recently opened in April. To check them out or email a friend, go to www.california-grown.com.

Roseville has a couple of markets in town at the Granite Bay Quarry Pond Shopping Center and at the new Fountain’s Shopping Center. If you fancy heading to a more “out of town” location for a nice road trip/field trip with the kids, check out the farmer's markets in Auburn, Homewood Ski Resort, Tahoe or Colfax. All of the Placer County locations, along with times, can be found at www.foothillfarmersmarket.com/.
