Road trips are a fundamental element of summer fun. This year, we at the North Sac News invite you to join us in our Summer Fun Series as we visit some of my favorite destinations in Northern California. California has a very rich history, as those of you who took my Gold Country adventure tour last month are well aware. One of the golden state’s richest treasures is not gold, however. It is trees. California is home to the unique and majestic Coast Redwoods, the enormous old-growth sequoias, some of which are as old as Christianity and as tall as a 30-story building.
One of the best places in the world to view and appreciate these giants is just a short drive away, at the Muir Woods National Monument. Muir Woods is located 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, near Stinson Beach on Highway 1. Muir Woods National Monument is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area, which is a startling contrast to the harsh urban landscape just a short distance away.
You can expect a visit to Muir Woods to be an experience that you will not quickly forget. When you stand under the shady canopy of these colossal trees, the effect is humbling. The trees are ancient and elegant, and seem to be speaking a message of peace and tranquility. The park offers 6 miles of trails broken out into 30 minute, 60 minute, and 90 minute intervals. Along these trails through this ancient forest, many people pause to take photographs, sketch, or simply sit and meditate. There is much to consider in the Cathedral Grove as you listen to the simple orchestra of the forest floor.
For the history buffs, the Muir Woods National Monument has much to offer. There are five National Historic Landmarks in the park. Learn about how the natural coastline has served to defend San Francisco for over 200 years, discover secrets of shipwrecks laying off the coast, and tour a working lighthouse. Learn about the Northern Spotted Owl, or about the Coastal Miwok people and their culture through archaeological findings. Find out more about John Muir and what he has done for Northern California. Throughout the summer, there will be guided tours and events in the Muir Woods National Monument and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. You can enjoy your surroundings while learning from a trained docent or tour guide.
When you plan your trip to Muir Woods, remember that there are many exciting things to do in the surrounding area. You may choose to visit the Marin Headlands for more hiking, or picnic at Stinson Beach. For military history enthusiasts, consider a visit to Fort Baker. Cross the bridge into San Francisco for fine dining or a visit to the Wharf or Alcatraz Island.
Always remember when engaging in outdoor activities to wear comfortable and supportive shoes, stay well hydrated, hike with a friend, and never attempt to push yourself beyond your abilities. These outings should be fun and interesting, not exhausting.
We are excited to be sharing with you our Summer Fun destination series, and we want to hear from you. Feel free to email pictures and stories of your adventures to us at submit@thenorthsacnews.com.
