Community necessitates business and business drives community. If one suffers, all suffer. If one thrives, both have great opportunity to grow and thrive. The North Highlands News is about both.
Ten short years ago a group of community members, committed to improving the quality of life in North Highlands, gave birth to the North Highlands News as a community newspaper designed to strengthen and solidify the North Highlands area.
Over the past few months, we have been garnering input from residents and business people concerning a new name for the North Highlands News. The result has been tremendously positive for the most part, but some have not yet come to the understanding of why we would want to change. We are promoting growth and unity in community. With an expansion in our coverage area comes greater exposure for our businesses, which serves them better. They get better exposure for their advertising dollars and draw people to do business in North Highlands from beyond its borders.
The majority of us in the North Highlands, Antelope, Elverta, and Rio Linda areas now travel beyond our separated communities to get groceries, shop, and enjoy a meal out. Expanded coverage for these communities allows for greater knowledge of what is available right in our own back yard.
You might ask – why change the name when you already serve these areas? Well, there are those who might not pick up a North Highlands News due to the lack of recognition that North Highlands is a changed community. In the past, this area of town developed a less than positive image. North Highlands has made the turn and has come a long way since then, being held back only by the minds of people not adjusting to the current reality. We admittedly need additional redevelopment, but North Highlands has at its heart what every community needs, including great people.
A few fear that targeting a larger service area means that we will lose the community focus. However, we are resolute in serving this community at a greater level, and are working diligently to generate more community involvement to reflect that commitment. Our efforts have always been to benefit the North Highlands community and this remains our focus.
