Senior Gleaner Inc. (SGI) is awarding Betty Kitchens the November 1st International Volunteer Managers Day award. SGI is proud of the Cafeteria Department Head Betty Kitchens, for the hard work and dedication that is obvious in the way our volunteers appreciate the great meals given each day.
Kitchens started in 1983 with Senior Gleaners and did her share of gleaning in the fields until her health gave out. Instead of giving up, she offered her service to the cafeteria as the lead for Wednesday’s crew. She then became the department manager, and has held that position for the last 10 years.
Kitchens stated “My family had been one of the original volunteers who started Senior Gleaners. I was impressed with what I had seen of the operation, and felt it was a great way to give back to the community. Since I had been in the food service environment in the past, it just made sense to me to say where I knew I could do the most good.”
“My reward for working in the cafeteria is when our volunteers come up to me or a member of my team and tells us what a great meal that was.”
