In the spring of 2007, Rio Linda High School’s football stadium went through a major transformation. If you have driven passed Elkhorn and Dry Creek lately, you have seen the improved track and football field that is proudly bearing the Knight’s logo.
Twin Rivers Unified School District (formerly GJUHSD) decided that the field needed a face lift and used bond issues to fund the operation. They faced a few challenges along the way. The remodel started later that planned, interrupting practice and scrimmage game schedules. They also had to move the Agriculture Garden to the west side of the field. However, when the 07/08 season opener was won against the Union Mine Diamondbacks, all of those challenges were worth it. The benefits will be reaped for years to come. “The biggest benefit is the new excitement it creates for the students. There is a growing sense of pride among the community that comes from having a new stadium,” says Mike Morris. He has been the Athletic Director for three years and the Head Football Coach since 1991.
As with most field remodels, RLHS used a synthetic turf from Forever Green Athletic Fields, Inc. Artificial materials seem to be a more common choice for many reasons. The maintenance is minimal and it saves the school district money in the long run. Also, the safety it brings to the players reduces the risk of injuries at a critical age in their life. And finally, the durability of the field will give many generations a great field to play on. They also used Sportsfield to replace their goalposts, dugouts, and other structures. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more high schools following suit.
I agree with Mike Morris that Rio Linda Stadium is a facility to be excited about. I drove by it recently and the stadium stood out strong and proud. If you would like to see the lights and action of a good home-town football game, stop by on September 12, 2008 to see the Rio Linda Knights take on the Roseville Tigers.
