The GFWC Antelope- North County Women’s Club is celebrating the 119th anniversary of the GFWC this April 24th. The GFWC members work locally to change the world. We are hard at work in the areas of women’s health, children’s health care, and domestic violence awareness. Our club collected items for our local women’s shelter, Harmony House in Citrus Heights last October. We collected travel sized personal care items. We made 116 personal care kits with the help of the women at the Antelope Curves and London Nails.
The GFWC is different from most other service organizations by the number of outreach programs. Our members work in conservation with programs like Penny Pines, which helps reforest burnt out national forests here in California. The members also work in education with programs such “Books for Babies” and literacy tutors. The members support the visual arts and the performing arts in communities all over California. Right here in Antelope our members work in the Public Affairs Department by supporting families of soldiers overseas when they have babies with our “Operation Top Knot” and by adopting soldiers over in Iraq and Afghanistan, sending them packages, cards and letters. Antelope is lucky to have both the GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club and the Antelope Quilters Guild working on “Operation Top Knot” together. The members of the quilter’s guild make wonderful baby quilts and the members of the women’s club see that the families receive the gifts.
Nationally the GFWC members donated $180,000 for a fully equipped ambulance to the Fire Department of New York City to help rebuild the resources of the fire department after the events of 9/11. The members donated over $135 million in books and materials fulfilling a commitment to America’s Promise to help our local libraries all over the USA through the Libraries 2000 program.
