[incline:1]We are faced with a very serious problem: unlicensed contractors who pose as legal contractors, to rip off the unsuspecting property owner. I'll bet that most of you know someone, or have heard of somebody, who has been scammed by the unlicensed contractor. With today's rugged economy, make no mistake that the rip-offs are going to get worse. The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) is a state agency and is not able to guarantee protection against this illegal activity. Underfunded and undermanned against the staggering numbers of cases, it is only through informing the public that we can hope to stop this alarming trend from affecting our neighbors, family and friends.
There are less than 325,000 legal, licensed contractors in this state and there is an estimated minimum of one and half million unlicensed contractors. That's more than a four to one ratio. I don't like those odds. Today it is legal to do any construction job under 500.00 (considering the cost of parts and labor). But when it comes to plumbing, electrical, roofing, drywall, garage door openers(there's some weight) remodels, additions, major tree work, concrete, patio covers, pool and spa installation, and repair, you need a credentialed professional.
HOW TO AVOID BEING SCAMMED...
The best way to expose fraudulent contractors is to ask them on the phone before giving out any of your information. Ask: What is your state contractors license number, and your name please?
That's it; once the name and number is given you can let them know you will be getting back to them, upon verification. Be ready for excuses, remember that 4 to 1 ratio? You're going to hear that their license is pending, in the mail, they left it at the office and the classic.........I'll get back to you on that!
You can call the automated CSLB 24-hour license verification line at 1-800-321-2752. This number is the main CSLB line for any license issue or query. License checks can be quickly processed online at www.cslb.ca.gov, where you will also find a lot of other related information. Please protect yourself and your loved ones and ALWAYS make sure the contractor license is verified.
